Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India has taken the initiative of introducing scholarships for the children of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) from 69 countries. The candidates can apply under the Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children 2024 to take an opportunity to pursue undergraduate courses in Indian universities or institutes. Many Indian residents stay abroad because of their work and want to pursue it in India.

  • The 75% scholarship amount will be given in 1st year of their graduation, the remaining amount will be given if the candidate scores more than 55% in their semester or previous examination. In case candidates don’t score more than 55%, then they will get only 90% of their scholarship amount. There will be a total of 150 students selected from NRIs/PIOs/OCIs and 17 ECR countries or girls will get 50% reservation on seats.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates must be diaspora Children whose parents are Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
  • Candidates must complete their schooling from class 7th to 12th standard from 69 eligible countries except Bangladesh or Pakistan.
  • Children whose parents are working in 17 ECR countries should complete their 12th examination with at least 60% marks from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU)-recognized education system.
  • Children who are staying in Nepal should have 2 years of schooling and must complete their 11th and 12th from Nepal.
  • Candidates must score at least 60% marks in their previous examination.
  • The age of the candidate should be between 17 to 21 years before 31st July 2023.
  • For children whose parents are Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), their annual family income should not be more than USD $5,000.
  • Candidates whose parents are Indian Workers in 17 ECR countries, their family income should be between USD $3,000.

Number of Beneficiaries Category Wise

There will be a total 150 seats allotted for the eligible candidates:

  • 100 seats are reserved for the children of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
  • 50 seats are reserved for children whose parents are Indian workers and working in 17 ECR countries.
  • There will be a 50% reservation for Girl candidates.
  • Out of 100 seats in PIOs/OCIs/NRIs 50 seats for girls and 50 seats for boys.
  • In the case of Indian workers who work in 17 ECR countries, there will be 33 seats for children who studied Abroad (Male- 15, Female- 17) and 17 for children studied in India. (Male- 9, Female- 8).
