This fellowship is started by the Ministry Of Social Justice And Empowerment and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. This Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship will offer financial assistance to the following category of students to take part in M.Phil\Phd courses to do research. Students will get a fellowship amount only if they are enrolled in regular classes from the recognized university\college or institution.
They must opt for the following courses: Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Engineering & Technology. Selected students get fellowship amounts according to their pursuing course and category. This is a great initiative taken by the ministry to look over the students belonging to backward communities.

The Ministry Of Social Justice And Empowerment and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs is responsible for the implementation of the Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship for students who are currently enrolled in master’s course and want to pursue M.Phil\Phd courses. There will be 1333 seats reserved for the students who belong to the Scheduled caste and 667 seats are reserved for the students who belong to the Scheduled tribe community.
- Every year following seats is released for students in every subject. The fellowship scheme is not only limited to the ST\SC Community but also the transgender students who are waiting for such fellowships to get help it to complete their higher studies.

Eligibility Criteria for Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship

Benefits of Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship
The following benefits will be received by the selected candidates:
- The SC\ST students who enrolled under the M.Phil\Phd course will be able to avail the benefit of the fellowship.
- The selected candidates will get a fellowship for two years. After this, the work of the candidate will be evaluated by a Committee of three members consisting of the Head of the Department, the Supervisor, and one outside subject expert to be constituted by the concerned Department of the /University/Institution/College.
- If the work is done in a good manner, then the fellowship duration will be extended to a period of 3 years.
- In case candidates fail any examination of Ph.D. or do not do their research work properly then the fellowship will be discontinued.
- The total period of receiving a fellowship is of 5 years, after its completion, no extra time will be given.
